March 2nd and 3rd 2021 the European Horizon 2020 Opportunities project kicked-off. Opportunities includes the involvement of numerous non-governmental organisations from Romania, Italy, Belgium, France, Portugal and Mauritania and the cooperation with African partners (Senegal, Ghana and Mauritania) as well as, and several universities from Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, Senegal and Ghana.
Opportunities starts from the observation that the crisis metaphor in refugee policy promotes anti-European and anti-humanitarian sentiments: the humanitarian catastrophes of flight and displacement become a security and distribution problem, the "refugee crisis" becomes a "crisis of Europe", and becomes a “crisis of humanitarian values”.
This is where Opportunities comes in: Opportunities wants to stimulate a forward-looking and productive debate based on principles for a fair dialogue on immigration and successful integration.
Inspired by the economic metaphor of the "level playing field", which describes a "fair play" in the EU's internal market, Opportunities is now striving for a "fair narrative" based on multi-perspectivity and on an equal dialogue, called a "level telling field".
Opportunities reconstructs different perspectives on migration and integration in countries of origin, transit and destination. An innovative method, called “cross-talks”, talks between refugees, migrants, stakeholders and citizens brought in an equal setting, will generate platforms for a new dialogue on immigration and inclusion. The results will be interpreted by local cultural events and in a touring production by KVS Theatre Brussels re-enacted on European stages.
The results will be translated into concrete policy recommendations for Europe and for the several states. The European Commission expects Opportunities to be "a way out of the poisoned atmosphere of current debates on migration and integration".
Beweging is proud to be initiator and general coordinator of this project. And will happily works together with Bergische Universität Wuppertal, as scientific coordinator, and with all the 11 other partners of Opportunities.
This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101004945.
